History
Design Planning
Built as a fully planned city featuring distinct administrative, residential, and religious quadrants. Emperor Akbar envisioned the city following his successful campaigns in Gujarat, arranging the layout to symbolize his absolute authority over the expanding empire.
Material Construction
Erected predominantly out of locally quarried red sandstone known as Sikri sandstone. This material allowed for intricate geometric stone-carving, enabling the creation of elaborate pierced stone screens (jalis) that define the city's window designs.
Buland Darwaza
The main entrance gate measures 54 meters high, built to commemorate military victories. It was added nearly a decade after the city's initial construction, requiring visitors to climb 42 steep steps, further emphasizing the intimidating scale of Mughal power.
Significance
It survives as an unusually intact example of a 16th-century Mughal walled city. Despite being largely abandoned due to critical water shortages, the site perfectly preserves Akbar's architectural philosophy, blending indigenous Indian elements with central Asian templates.

Urs of Salim Chishti
Annual observance gathering thousands at the white marble tomb located in the courtyard. Devotees tie small threads to the intricate marble lattice screens, carrying forward the tradition of seeking blessings from the revered Sufi saint.
Basant Panchami
